چکیده

We present a combined analysis of the low-mass initial mass function (IMF) for seven star-forming regions. We first demonstrate that the ratios of stars to brown dwarfs are consistent with a single underlying IMF. By assuming that the underlying IMF is the same for all seven clusters and by combining the ratio of stars to brown dwarfs from each cluster, we constrain the shape of the brown dwarf IMF and find it to be consistent with a lognormal IMF. This provides the strongest constraint yet that the substellar IMF turns over ( , a dN/dM ∝ M ). a ! 0 Subject headings: stars: formation — stars: low-mass, brown dwarfs — stars: luminosity function, mass function — stars: pre–main-sequence

Evidence for a Turnover in the IMF of Low Mass Stars and Sub–stellar Objects: Analysis from an Ensemble of Young Clusters

Evidence for Circumstellar Disks around Young Brown Dwarfs in the Trapezium Cluster

We report the results of deep infrared observations of brown dwarf candidates in the Trapezium cluster in Orion. Analysis of the JHK color-color diagram indicates that a large fraction (∼ 65% ± 15%) of the observed sources exhibit infrared excess emission. This suggests the extreme youth of these objects and in turn, provides strong independent confirmation of the existence of a large populatio...

Deuterium-burning in substellar objects

We consider the depletion of primordial deuterium in the interior of substellar objects as a function of mass, age and absolute magnitude in several photometric passbands. We characterize potential spectroscopic signatures of deuterium in the lines of deuterated water HDO. These results will serve as a useful, independent diagnostic to characterize the mass and/or the age of young substellar ob...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Luminosity Functions of Young Clusters: Modeling the Substellar Mass Regime

We predict near-infrared luminosity functions of young (5 Myr to 1 Gyr) star clusters by combining evolutionary models of very low-mass (1 MJ to 0.15 M ) dwarfs with empirical bolometric corrections. We identify several characteristic features in our results. These can be attributed to three causes: (1) deuterium burning in the most massive substellar objects; (2) methane absorption in bodies w...
